UMass, Mount Ida close on real estate acquisition that shuts down private college

It’s a done deal: University of Massachusetts officials closed on the controversial real estate deal allowing the acquisition of Mount Ida College in Newton, Mass.

Mount Ida, a private college founded as a girls finishing school in 1899, becomes the latest Massachusetts educational institution to fall in the last several years. The state has seen 15 closures and mergers in the last five years, state higher education officials say, and more are expected amid demographic shifts in student numbers.

Springfield’s Tower Square, Tower Square Hotel under new ownership

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Tower Square and the Tower Square Hotel in downtown Springfield have a new owner.
The building was purchased by western Massachusetts business owner Dinesh Patel and multiple business partners.
They told 22News that they plan to bring retail shops to the area, but would not say what those shops would be, or what else the real estate would be used for.
Tower Square is an office tower and retail complex that has long been owned by MassMutual.
Patel and his business partners purchased the building for $10.5 million.

Springfield auction of tax-title properties draws bids totaling $693,500

SPRINGFIELD — A public auction of 23 tax-title properties drew an overflow crowd at City Hall Tuesday, generating successful bids totaling $693,500.
“I think it’s great,” City Treasurer-Collector Stephen Lonergan said Wednesday. “It shows that people are aware that there are good values at the auction. It shows people want to own property in Springfield and want to live in Springfield.”
